At every Ten Fingers, we have a little contest where people can come up and tell a little 2-minute story. Some Spaniards were high off of their World Cup win, and they decided to come up and rant a little. We loved it. I mean, it didn't hurt they were pretty easy on the eyes.

Last Night....She Said

Went to the awesome event Quiet Lightning last night, where a gaggle of killer writers lynched us with their words. It was a cool format--a writer would fly up and without introduction would launch into her piece, finish and make room for the next one. There were some genuinely impressive and funny people. I'm considering submitting a piece for the next event but I'm kinda sorta terrified that I won't be nearly as good. If you're uncomfortable telling a story without a piece of paper, you should submit your stuff to them, too. Their deadline is the 18th of this month and the next Quiet Lightning is Sept. 6.

Next Monday, I'm attending the Rumpus at the Make Out Room, 7pm sharp. That's ALWAYS a blast. You should mos def come meet me there. I'll be drinking the IPA.

Thank you everybody for coming out to Ten Fingers last night! Our fantastic performers were:

Brett Wise told us about being the fattest baby ever!
Patrick Wu regaled us with his tale about hitting on a prostitute!
Janine Brito shared her worst breakup experience!
Sam Hemingway showed us how not to unload a car in Oakland!
Susan Pedrick dropped a bomb on us about double dildos!
Tim Garvey was extremely polite at the Santa Cruz diner!
....and Gloria showed us her tea cozies and talked about her vagina!

and the winnnnnners were...

2nd place:
Joshua Walters won with his story about hiding weed from the po-po. He also was the resident beatboxer of the night, providing excellent music for a gang of Spaniard ballet dancers, who decided to drop in and do their thang.

And our first prize winner, who took home $150:
Dave Thomason! He talked about being a fat kid and having a crush on a fellow fat girl...and her magic-card playing dad.

What a fantastic night. Seeya in September!

The Best Line in Storytelling

Definitely one of the best lines I've ever heard in the history of storytelling came from a sweet, diminutive woman named Gloria.

She won the mini, 2-minute storytelling competition with the theme "Most Embarrassing Story." Try your hand at telling an off-the-cuff 2-minute story and come see Gloria tell a full-length story at Ten Fingers, THIS THURSDAY, July 15th. Cafe Royale, 8:45 pm after "Inside Story Time," an open-mic that is being held before us.

NEXT TEN FINGERS!

Hey all,

The next TEN FINGERS is going to be at 8:45pm, Thursday, July, 15th @ Cafe Royale.

Cafe Royale is located on 800 Post @Leavenworth.

Anybody can come up and tell their story--you just need to email me in advance at stephanie@snapjudgment.org! Come to tell YOUR story or to listen. The first prize winner will take home $150 and the runner up will win $50. We will also have a mini 2-minute storytelling contest, and the best storyteller for that will take home $25!

So. Every storyteller's story has the opportunity to run on NPR's new storytelling show, Snap Judgment.

Only three rules:
1) Keep it under 10 minutes or I will kill you with my lightsaber.
2) We prefer nonfiction(ish) stories.
3) No reading! Half of storytelling is interacting with your audience. So let's hear it.

THANKS for coming out to the Ten Fingers event at Cafe Royale the other night! The place was packed and there was an awesome stream of magnificent storytellers. They made us laugh, they made us wince, and they most of all transported us into their worlds for one awesome night. The winners were:

1st: Emily Heller

2nd: April Wolfe

3rd: Dave Salisbury

But the votes were close, and everyone did a terrific job!! Please check back regularly--the next Ten Fingers date will be posted soon. We were very sorry that some storytellers were not able to go onstage due to time constraints, but do not fret! You'll be on the list to be the first ones at the next event.

Everyone’s got that story. You know the one. The one you tell parties when you want to draw a crowd. The one you tell to the girl to make her pretty eyes go wide. The one that makes everyone scream, “NO WAY!” Yeah, that story. We want to hear it. And we’ll give you a present for doing so.

Ten Fingers is a FREE storytelling event akin to The Moth (themoth.org). Anyone can get up and tell their story to an adoring crowd of storytellers and storylovers. Break our hearts. Turn our stomachs. Make us laugh. Tell us a story about poop. Seriously, whatever. There’s only one rule: keep it under ten minutes.

Snap Judgment (snapjudgmentradio.org) will provide a CA$H PRIZE to the narrator of the best story—the audience will judge. $200 could be yours! First place takes $200, 2nd takes $20 and 3rd takes $2...

FOR STORYTELLERS:

Anyone can go up to the stage and talk, but if you’re planning on telling your story, please email me at [stephfoo@gmail.com] beforehand with the approximate length of your story so I can get a good sense of our time constraints.

All stories told at the event will be recorded, and the best ones have the potential to be used on Snap Judgment (a radio show very similar to This American Life which will be broadcast nationally on NPR stations within the coming months.) If you are itching to get on the show, keep in mind that our stories generally follow the traditional 3-act structure: Set us up, give us a dramatic conflict and then lead us into the resolution.
